Dear Ethan, Year 1, Month 6

Posted on Mon 06/11/07 in Fatherhood

Dear Ethan,

I’m finding out that having you in my life has caused some modifications to my emotional catalog. I admit that I’m a sensitive guy; I care about what people I admire think about me; I express love and disappointment when appropriate; I also enjoy Strawberry-flavored milk and long walks on the beach. But, it has been extremely rare in my life that I’d become overwhelmed with emotion that tears actually shed.

Since you coming into my life, this occurs more often. Everything you do makes my life more special.

Let’s use this as a segway to discuss what impressive tricks you’re doing at this point.

Things you say and do:

  • Identify people: mommy, daddy, ma ma (for grandma), pa pa (for grandpa), boo (for Bruce) and “eh ka” (for Jessica), you can say other names semi-clearly, like Melanie, Kimberly, Lauren, and as of late, a whole slew of other names. You recognize people you see often and seem to adorably warm up to them.

  • You say “please”, “thank you”, “all done”, “cool”, “uh oh” or “shit” when you drop something… which we’ve almost returned completely to “uh oh”, “ilk” (for milk), “tac toe” or “park” when you want to go to the park, “car”, “truck”, “help me”, “pool” when you want to go in the pool, “up”, “Elmo”, “shoes”, “shishes” which is fish, and you can spot “flowers” and “apples” from almost anywhere, including in pictures on the wall at restaurants.

  • You absolutely LOVE:

AIRPLANES – “na na” or “planes”. Since we live just south of the main approach for the nearby international airport, you can stand outside all day and watch the big metal flying by during landing approach. You also love to watch airplanes on the computer. Thank God for Youtube. Click here to see your current playlist. Last week, everything you touched started turning into an airplane. You make the sound “aaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrr” and hold things over your head: cookies, utensils, brush, diapers… everything has now become an airplane.

TRAINS – “train” or “choo choo” (with the appropriate hand gesture). You love Thomas the Train. You love the little trains that grandma bought for you and you also like to watch the tv show… which I discovered is narrated by the likes of Alec Baldwin and George Carlin. You like to line up your trains on the desk while you watch Youtube videos of real trains. It’s quite cute.

BRUSHING YOUR TEETH – “ba” is what you say when you want to brush all of your FOUR teeth. You stand proudly on your step-stool and demand toothpaste. You rinse your brush and will slam it around in your mouth for as long as we let you. You’ll even go to your friends’ houses and grab their toothbrushes.

Geez… there really are so many things that I am wishing I’d have kept better track for the last several months… but I didn’t.

Click play on the video above to see Ethan watching the F-22 on the computer and saying “cool” (for those of you who don’t understand kid talk).

Here are some pictures from this year’s air show. We had the pleasure of watching from the water.

Here is a link to pictures from our first trip to Metro Zoo. Very fun.

Mom and I are having a lot of fun watching you grow up. You’re starting to get time-outs iin your room for doing things that you know you are wrong. How do we know you know? Because you say “No” and look at us before you chuck something across the room, dump a bowl of Cherrios on the floor, or try to eat mommy’s engagement ring.

Love,
Dad

Something to add?
